A unique adventure to the heart of AFrica

The Kunda trail takes you on a journey through Uganda, truly called the green pearl of Africa, and Rwanda, also known as the land of a thousand hills.

The journey starts and ends in Kampala,
the capital of Uganda, a bustling city, laid out across seven green hills at the shores of Lake Victoria. It takes its fabled name from Kasozi K, Impala, which means ‘the hill of the Antelopes’. Explore Owino Market, a thriving market with hundreds of vendors selling anything from car spare parts to juicy papayas and Adidas shoes. During the afternoon, visit the Kasubi Royal Tombs, a remarkable part of Buganda’s heritage.

After passing the Equator, you proceed to Queen Elisabeth National Park in the western part of the Rift Valley at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains. Its crater-dotted hills and grassland are home to an abundance of wildlife, among which buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, and the unique Ugandan kob. A boat trip on the Kazinga Channel that links lake Edward and Lake George provides a unique vantage for viewing savannah wildlife. The channel has one of the world’s largest concentrations of hippos and Nile crocodiles. With over 500 bird species, Queen Elisabeth National Park is also a true paradise for bird watchers. You will proceed to Ishasha, the southern end of the park, to see the famous tree-climbing lions.

After an early morning breakfast the journey takes southwards, through the magnificent landscape of the Kigezi Highlands. Shortly after crossing the border, you reach Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Despite its rapid development, Kigali, with its verdant slopes, its wide green avenues and blessed with a moderate high altitude climate, retains the feel of a garden city. Nothing can tell that this city once was the scene of the genocide during which close to 1 million people were killed in a mere 100 days. The genocide memorial contains a permanent exhibition of the Rwandan genocide and is a clear reminder of the cost of ignorance.

After a short beautiful ride through the Rwandan countryside you will arrive in Ruhengeri near Volcanoes National Park.  The lushly forested slopes of the misty mountains form a dramatic natural setting for the most memorable wildlife encounter in the world. In the footsteps of Diane Fossey, you go gorilla tracking into the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest and come eye to eye with the mountain gorilla in his natural habitat.

A short drive will bring you to Gisenyi at the beautiful Lake Kivu with one of the most spectacular shorelines in the world. Wake up by the cry of the fish eagle and enjoy a relaxing day on the beach watching a wide range of water birds among which pelicans, crowned cranes and malachite kingfishers.

Return to Uganda to reach Lake Mburo National Park. The park harbors a variety of mammals and is home to thousands of zebras, impalas, buffalos, elands, oribi, topi, bush duikers as well as waterbuck, leopards, vervet monkeys and baboons.

A four-hour drive will bring you back to Kampala where you can enjoy the last day shopping.
